WHERE: YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park, Colorado; 2515 Tunnel Rd, Estes Park, CO 80511 – check-in for Camp will be at Hempel Auditorium (please see attached map).
YMCA of the Rockies has two beautiful locations. Camp is located at The Estes Park Center (address above & map attached) and is located just outside the village of Estes Park, CO, and is surrounded on three sides by Rocky Mountain National Park. It is about a five-to-ten-minute drive from downtown Estes Park to the YMCA and 74 miles from Denver.
ACCOMODATIONS: During the week of Camp, we will be staying in the Eastside Lodges at the YMCA of the Rockies. Our lodge rooms at the YMCA of the Rockies do not have cooking facilities, refrigerators or in-room televisions. Towels and bedding are provided. All lodge rooms have private bathrooms, hair dryers and in-shower soap dispensers. Shampoo and conditioner are not included. The lodge rooms do not have air-conditioning, but because of the cool mountain nights, open windows and fans provide comfort during the summer.
FOOD: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served every day in the Aspen Dining Room, all-you-can-eat, buffet-style dining hall. Fresh salad bar, delicious desserts, homemade specialties and beverages accompany every meal. Gluten free and vegetarian options are available. When entering the dining room, request assistance from a YMCA staff member.
The General Store located in the Administration building offers a limited selection of grocery items.
The Jim Ryun Running Camp Store will have hooded sweatshirts, long sleeved t-shirts, water bottles, socks, snacks, etc available for sale (first come first serve). If you wish, you may purchase online & pick-up onsite.
AIRPORT SHUTTLE: There is a shuttle that Campers can take to/from the airport, you can make reservations here: Homepage | Estes Park Shuttle
WEATHER: Weather can vary dramatically over the course of a day because of the altitude (8,010 feet above sea level). We recommend bringing a variety of clothing layers. Check the current weather and monthly averages.
Summer temperatures can be warm during the day and chilly at night. We recommend bringing light-weight clothes for the day and warm jackets for the evenings. Summer is known for afternoon thunderstorms, so be prepared by having a rain jacket.
YMCA of the Rockies’ elevation is over 8,000 feet above sea level and oxygen is approximately 45% less dense. Guests from lower elevations may notice shortness of breath, and some may also experience fatigue and dizziness associated with altitude sickness. To prevent these symptoms, drink plenty of water (64 oz daily), get plenty of rest and eat lightly.
Your chance of sunburn also increases at higher elevations. Be sure to use plenty of sunscreen and protect your eyes with sunglasses.
PACKING: Check out the list here! Please note that Tuesday is “Team T-Shirt Tuesday,” please bring your favorite team tee and wear it proudly all day!
On Thursday night, we are having a Western cookout - bring your best cowboy/cowgirl get up and prepare to yee-haw all night (well almost all night!)!
TRIVIA/TALENT NIGHT: Also on Thursday night, we will have an incredibly fun evening which includes talent night! Bring your best talent to share with your fellow Campers. Sign up when you arrive at Camp.
LOST KEYS: Upon check-in, you will receive your key for the week. PLEASE note that if lost, you will be charged a $10 fee.
CASH: We would suggest that your Camper have with him/her some cash for such things as Camp Store, snacks and Free Time activities offered by the YMCA.
